Alexis Sanchez's first goal for Arsenal gave the Gunners a 1-0 win over Besiktas on Wednesday, despite Mathieu Debuchy's late red card.
The Chilean forward, who has largely flattered to deceive since making a high-profile move from Barcelona, struck just before half-time in the second leg of Wednesday's play-off, following last week's first leg 0-0 draw.
VIEW FROM THE EMIRATES
By Wayne Veysey
A relieved Emirates faithful file out of the stadium safe in the knowledge that their team will appear in the Champions League proper for a 17th consecutive year.
Arsenal had to dig in to see off a wonderfully committed Besiktas, who threw the kitchen sink at the hosts in the final minutes following the sending-off of Debuchy.
Wenger's team rode their luck at times but they also played with a fluency that has been lacking in some of their early season displays. His effort, backed up by a stellar showing from Jack Wilshere and some dogged defending following Debuchy's 76th-minute red card, was enough to see the Premier League side progress to the competition proper for the 17th successive year.
